In descending order of size, here are some quilt numbers:
- Total estimated finished quilt size: 60" by 50"
- Number of squares making up quilt: 30 (six rows across, five down)
- Size of each square: 10" (before sewing into the quilt, 10.5")
- Seam allowances: Quarter inch
- Number of fabric pieces per quilt square: 22, plus a "nameplate" square in natural white where kids write names using fabric pen.
- Size of each fabric piece: 2.5"
I had a whole bunch of synthetic felt leftover from an abandoned project. I cut them about 13" by 13" (I was not exact), and gave one to each kid. They used this felt to build their squares. This worked out great. The fabric clung to the felt and even though I had to pile all of these completed squares in a box to get them home, it really was not too bad peeling them apart. In this way, I was able to safely transport the kids' designs home without having to pin or otherwise adhere the fabric squares to a surface. Pinning would have taken FOREVER. And, I am going to donate all the felt to the school when I am done. I am sure they can use it for something.
Here are a few shots of pieces that have not been sewn yet:

I am pleased with how this is coming together. So far, so good. I am already undecided about how to quilt it, and whether to futz around with a border for each piece. I think it might help even up some of the squares. I really messed up on the seam allowance because I thought my machine's foot width was exactly a quarter inch, when actually, the quarter inch mark is just inside. So that means the first 10 or so squares I did are a bit smaller than they should be. Some sashing would help alleviate that. But I just don't know. I have a few weeks before I have to make a decision about that.
